New Direction

A friend on Facebook got me thinking about getting back in shape. He has managed to gain ~40lbs over the past 4 years and is trying to get back in race shape. I have not gone that far, but I am probably in some of the worst shape I can remember.

I didn’t want to put it on facebook because I am always making and then failing on these kinds of resolutions, and there’s far fewer people to dissapoint here… but I am making it a goal of mine to get back in to relatively good shape and quickly. Like, by April. I figure that’s when Kelly’s ski season ends (freeing up our Saturdays), and when local racing really gets cracking. I can’t commit to a huge schedule, but I am obligated to do some racing as I am running a new team. And if I’m going to race, I might as well not suck!

I know my best years racing-wise are well behind me. 2003 was probably the best year ever and, yeah, that’s forever ago. I will never train like that again. 2004-2006, I didn’t train much, but had great muscle memory from the 10 years previous… I think it’s realistic to get back to 2007-2009-ish form. I was still somewhat regularly winning races then.

So while I’ve always said that training type blogs and websites bore me…that’s pretty much the direction I’m going in here! Hopefully I can make it semi-entertaining, while still having to “answer to the blog”. This will also solve the lack of content. It’s kinda weird when you have a cycling blog and you aren’t really riding consistently.

If all goes to plan, which is HUGELY unlikely, I’ll race master’s nationals this summer since they are local. Maybe I’ll win! Always an optimist…

Oh yeah, I did just confirm that I MIGHT do a master’s race. I know this will please my two biggest readers.

Anyway, I’ll plan to update every few days.

Oh yeah, so I came up with this plan this morning and I’m off to a great start by doing nothing (physical) today!

Wish me luck and thanks for reading!

SNOW

At last, we are getting nailed. Resorts are looking at 20-36″ from yesterday through Sunday. Pretty stoked. I don’t know when I’ll get up there though as Kelly works tomorrow and Saturday and I’ll have to say home with the kiddoes. I guess I could go Friday night or maybe… Sunday? Sometimes it’s hard being super Mormon-ish.

In any case, it’s good news all around. The old snow was super crusty, the air was bad and now we don’t have those problems. Plus water and less fires, if you’re into the long term.

Growing up in Virginia, they closed schools pretty much any time we had snow. Yes, western snow is “different” (POW), but still, they have yet to close schools since we’ve lived here (10 years). And we do get a decent amount of snow! They are REALLY good at clearing the roads here though. As long as you’re not driving during the storm, you’re pretty much fine with 2WD.

In other news, just finding my groove again this week. Weather has presented some challenges there, but I didn’t have a ton scheduled, so it’s worked out okay.

I’ve done some riding and running this week, so I feel slightly less sloth-like, which is nice.

You’ll never guess what I did today…

I rode rollers:

That is totally not me, and I didn’t even watch the video, but in case someone didn’t know what “rollers” are…now you do.

It’s the first time I’ve ridden inside in a few years, so I guess you could say things are getting pretty serious. I was thinking to ride outside, but I had to go in the morning and it was 10 degrees when I took the kids to school, which is below my threshold. Of course, as I came out of the basement, I saw two guys ride by. Gotta make me look bad, eh, fellas.

Anyway, at least I did something. I guess.

It’s a little known fact that I got my first set of rollers when I was 6 or 7 and rode my BMX on them. I’ve never been a fan of riding indoors, but managed to do it pretty consistently in the winter from that point through college, so I feel like I am exempt from needing to suffer through that particular brand of torture. Today wasn’t bad though, probably just for the novelty.

I do hope to ride outside some this week. It looks like we’ll finally be getting some new snow at the end of the week too. Super excited for some pow-pow. We need it. Bad.

Otherwise, as mentioned above, the kids are back in school (hallelujah) and I’m back to a normal work routine. Whatever “normal” is for me.

Procrastinating

Yep. I have get to teach a class in church tomorrow.

I should really get off my duff and do some prep for it while all the kids are playing nicely (hallelujah to that), but I haven’t really been up for it just yet. I should really lay Rory down for a nap, but as mentioned, everyone’s getting along for the moment, so why spoil it? Not quite true as Morgan is actually out of the house, but Haley has a friend over, so I’m still at 4 girls in the house, so I figure it counts.

Kelly is working today, so I took the girls out to Alpine to watch a fat obese bike race. It was pretty cold and windy, but we only hung out for half an hour or so to see some of my homies and then we bailed, so I don’t think it counts as child abuse. The whole obese bike (fat is so insensitive) trend is so weird to me, but it does look like fun. I am just surprised so many people are willing to spring for what is typically a 3rd or 4th bike in the quiver. Glad they are though!

Not much else to report. Check out my flipagram:

I just used the pictures and the very limited music on my phone, but I think it came out great!

Happy New Year

Daaaaaang. I haven’t posted in like 3 weeks. I need to either let the blog die or post more frequently. And I’m not ready to let ‘er die.

Where are my reminder monkeys?

I just noticed it’s been that long…I don’t have time to do a real post as I need to be somewhere(s) in 25 minutes. No idea where I left off. We’ve been enjoying the holiday season quite a bit. Kelly’s been working up at Sundance a ton, which has given me a lot of time home with the kiddoes. We’ve been skiing a bit too, but it’s a bit tough with the ages of the kids. Basically, Pip and Rory and can’t ski yet and there’s nowhere for them to go if’n I take Haley and Morg. That said the older two don’t want to go everyday or anything anyway, so it’s working out okay.

We went up today. Need more snow, STAT. That said, skiing on a warm and sunny day with kids is just fine and dandy.

I’ve not been riding at all. Or exercising, really, but hopefully I get back on track when the kids go back to school next week and I get back to a normal work routine. Yes, it sounds weird that going back to work would mean riding more, but it’s just….having a schedule.  I did ride briefly yesterday (something about NYD makes it feel important) and I went for a run the day before, but before that, it’d been…awhile.

Alright, I mean it this time, more posts coming. Peace out ya’ll.
